Minecraft 1.21 'Tricky Trials' Guide: Everything You Need to Know

The Minecraft 1.21 "Tricky Trials" update is one of the most mechanically significant updates in years. It brings new combat challenges, revolutionary automation blocks, and a brand-new way to experience dungeon crawling.

Whether you're a redstone engineer or a master PvPer, here’s a breakdown of the biggest features you need to know about.

1. Trial Chambers (The New Dungeon)

Trial Chambers are massive, procedurally generated underground structures made of copper and tuff blocks. They are designed for mid-to-late-game combat and offer unique rewards.

  • Trial Spawners: These spawners adjust their difficulty based on the number of players nearby and drop Trial Keys when defeated.
  • Breeze: A new wind-themed mob that leaps around and fires projectiles that knock players back.

2. The Crafter (Automated Crafting)

Finally, after years of requests, Minecraft has introduced the Crafter. This new Redstone-powered block allows you to automate the crafting of almost any item.

  • How it works: Use a redstone signal to trigger the craft. You can "lock" specific slots in the 3x3 grid to ensure only desired items are used.
  • Why it matters: It enables fully automatic farms for everything from TNT and Golden Apples to Rockets and Cake.

3. The Mace (The Ultimate Combat Tool)

The Mace is a heavy weapon with a unique "Smash Attack" mechanic. If you hit a mob while falling, you deal massive damage based on the height of your fall and reset your fall distance entirely.

  • Recommended Enchantments: Use Wind Burst to launch yourself back into the air after a successful hit, allowing for devastating combos.

4. Ominous Trials

If you enter a Trial Chamber while under the Bad Omen effect (now called "Ominous Bottle"), you trigger an Ominous Trial.

  • The Challenge: Mobs and Spawners are significantly harder and can fire projectiles like Wind Charges and Potions.
  • The Reward: Ominous Trial Keys, which open Ominous Vaults for the rarest loot in the game, including the "Heavy Core" needed for the Mace.
