How to Mute Players in Minecraft Chat

Playing on a large multiplayer server is one of the best parts of Minecraft, but sometimes you'll encounter a player who is being toxic, spamming, or using inappropriate language. Fortunately, Minecraft has built-in tools that allow you to mute any player instantly.

1. Minecraft: Java Edition (PC)

Since the 1.16.4 update, Java Edition has a dedicated system called the Social Interactions Screen.

  1. Press the P key on your keyboard while in a multiplayer game.
  2. Find the player you want to mute in the list.
  3. Click the Mute icon next to their name (looks like a chat bubble with a slash through it).
  4. You will no longer see any messages from that specific player.
NOTE

This mute is only for your local client. Other players will still see their messages, and the player will be unmuted the next time you restart your game.

2. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition (Console, Mobile, Windows 10)

In Bedrock Edition, the process is slightly different depending on your platform.

  1. Pause the game and go to the Players tab.
  2. Select the player you wish to mute.
  3. Click Mute or Block to stop seeing their chat.
  4. On some consoles, you can also use the system-level Block feature to stop all interactions with that player's Xbox Live or PlayStation account.

3. Server-Wide Muting

If you are a server admin or have operator (OP) status, you can mute a player for everyone on the server using a command (if you have a moderation plugin like EssentialsX installed):

  • /mute <PlayerName> [Time] [Reason]
  • (Example: /mute Steve 10m Spamming)
