Stonecutter Revolution in 26.1: Best Tips for Efficient Building
Before the 26.1 "Tiny Takeover" update, the Stonecutter was a useful, but sometimes inconsistent tool. In early 2026, Mojang has finally standardized stonecrafting, making the Stonecutter the single most important block for builders working with the game's newest stone types.
In this guide, we'll explain the major 26.1 changes and how you can use them to save hours of crafting time.
1. Direct Crafting for All Variants
In 26.1, any stone-like block can now be turned into any of its variants directly in the Stonecutter.
- Old System: To get Polished Deepslate, you first had to craft Deepslate Bricks, then polish them (or vice versa).
- New 26.1 System: Place a Raw Deepslate block in the Stonecutter, and you can instantly select Polished, Tiled, Brick, or Chiseled variants.
2. Tuff and Copper Integration
The Stonecutter now fully supports all the 1.21/26.1 Tuff and Copper variants.
- Tuff: Quickly turn raw tuff into polished or brick variants without multiple crafting steps.
- Copper: You can now cut copper blocks into stairs and slabs much more efficiently than using a standard crafting table.
3. 1:1 Resource Efficiency
The biggest advantage of the Stonecutter in 2026 is its 1:1 conversion rate.
- Example: If you need 4 Stairs, a Crafting Table requires 6 blocks. A Stonecutter only requires 4 blocks.
- Why it matters: For large-scale builds (especially with expensive blocks like Netherite or Gold Blocks), this saves hundreds of resources over time.
4. Automation with 'The Crafter'
While you cannot automate the Stonecutter directly, most professional builders in 2026 use a Crafter at the end of their auto-sorter to create the raw blocks that then go into their building supplies.
Building Hack: Keep a Stonecutter in your inventory at all times when building. It’s much faster to place a single block and get exactly what you need than to keep multiple stacks of different stair types.
